A chameleon escapes

I remember childhood days of buying chameleons at the pet
store. They were so cute and adorable, looked like
micro-miniature alligators. They would change color from
solid green to solid tan, and then back to green. I never
really knew what caused these color changes, I would just
look at them, and one time they would be green, another time
brown, and then later on they would be green again. I didn't
know there were any other colors in their repertoire. Until
the escape.

The chameleon wound up under the sofa. I don't
remember what led to the escape. But I looked in the cage,
and the chameleon wasn't there. I started looking around,
then I saw the family cat playing with something that was
under the sofa. The cat was fixated on its play, intent on
getting its paws on whatever was under there. It wasn't easy
to get the cat out of the way, but sure enough, once I did,
there was the chameleon. Stressed out. And, not green, not
brown, but alternating shades of tan and grey. Even a couple
of white blotches here and there. I didn't know a chameleon
could do that. It died later that day.
