A Short Story of Meika the Iguana

by Sarah
(Maple Valley WA)

Hello, my name is Sarah, I'm 17 and live in the state of Washington. I got my Iguana Meika December 7, 2009 when I was 16. She will be 2 years old in December.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into until I got her. When I got her she was in a 4 foot long by a foot long tank. The person I got her from didn't take very good care of her so I had a lot of work ahead of me. She was very wild and unsocial. It took me a while to be able to walk past her cage without her freaking out. I got her used to people and now can hold her all the time. This past summer (2010) I went to California to visit family and had to take her with.
Well I didn't want to lug a big glass tank down there so I got her a large wire dog cage that folded down. We had to get mesh to put around it to keep her from getting out. My step-dad helped me with this. So we go down to Cali and visit family. My family loves her.And she loves to climb the trees there. So summer comes to an end and we go back up to Washington.
Well I was a smart one and after only about a month of being back up there, I thought that she was big enough now to take the mesh off. (She grew 2 inches in just barley 2 months. (Lots of sun and Vitamin D) So I take the mesh off and that night she squeezes out of her cage. So I put her back in and watched as she got out again.
So now she free roams my room. I know you must be thinking "Doesn't she poop all over the room?" and the answer is no. Her cage is always open and she is litter trained. She will go into her cage to go to the bathroom. I was so proud the first time I saw her do that. lol
